Even discussed whether it is an emerging disease or a form of malaria that was being misdiagnosed; but beyond that may have similar blood forms of Plasmodium knowlesi with P. malarie and P. falciparum that have generated confusion. We must advance in the correct and opportune identification because severe and complicated forms of malaria are also associated requiring diagnosis and adequate treatment [1, 2]. We know that the etiologic agent may live in different species of monkeys in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and the Philippines, particularly Macaca fascicu- laris, and found the same haplotypes and alleles of the parasite in apes and humans, but also experimentally has been shown to infect endemic monkeys to Central and South America (1.2).
